A silhouette flop turned fan favorite, the Air Max 98 did not receive a warm welcome from Nike fans during its initial release in 1998. However, the silhouette has received much more love in recent years since Nike’s collaboration with Supreme, breathing new life into the once forgotten model.
Below we take a look at the Air Max 98 ‘Gundam’, one of the original colorways released in 1998. With the official colorway being ‘White/University Red-Obsidian-Metallic Silver-Game Royal-Black’, the ‘Gundam’ nickname was given by sneaker enthusiasts with inspiration coming from a character in the Japanese military sci-fi series.
Looking at StockX data, we can see that since their release in 2018, prices for the Air Max 98s have been consistently increasing with the occasional dip. We also see prices reaching new highs within the last year. While the Air Max 98 was not a huge hit in 1998, it appears that Nike was successful in reviving the model, evident by the demand in the resale market.
